Information about ICU and support offered

Being in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can be a daunting environment for both patients and their relatives and friends. Seeing a loved one connected to a series of tubes, wires and cables can be quite alarming. Some patients may be sedated during their stay to help them tolerate their condition and treatment. ICU staff understand that this situation can be quite scary and are there to help both the person receiving the care and to offer support to their family.

There are also charities that have been set up to support ICU patients and their relatives. Two of these are ICUsteps and the Intensive Care Foundation. They offer advice on what to expect and helpful advice on coping with an ICU stay, during and after.
