Paolo Cerretelli


Formally, Professor of Physiology in the Medical School at the University of Milano, Italy and Geneva, Switzerland. Presently, Honorary Professor at the University of Geneva and Associate Scientist at the Italian Research Council Institute of Bioimaging and Molecular Physiology, Segrate (Milan).

Specialist in Muscle and Exercise Physiology with particular interest for Altitude Physiology and Adaptation to Microgravity. Member of several mountaineering expeditions in the Karakoram range (Kanjut Sar, 1959) in Greenland (1960-62) and of the first successful Italian expedition to Mt Everest in 1973. Honoary President of Everest K2 CNR and scientific coordinator of biological and medial research at the Pyramid Laboratory at Lobuche (5050 m), Nepal.

Former President of the International Society for Mountain Medicine. Author of 225 papers in international journals, two chapters in the Handbook of Physiology of the American Physiological Society and of a textbook on Exercise Physiology.

Commendatore of the Republic of Italy.
